D II Screening Assignment 2


Marion - Prayers From The Inside

QUICK CUTS at the beginning. VO in BG good. Needs the sound of a rat in BG. BG Noise to loud overall. Radio FX a little loud overall. OOF shot NG - never use. Want a matching CU on big guy. MUCH BETTER.

Dir says - Prison track too loud.

Class sez: Tony cut around performance. Open to interpretation. SD elements. Tweaking on sd effects.

No titles/ OOF Shot on CU/ Wide OTS. Good use of cutaways/ Close ups don’t match. “You deserve better” Trachea - OOF Shot. . I’ll do it.

Andrew sez - She’s not an actor. He is. Graham is. Only in CU for performances. Cutting around programs. Shot size difference.

Class sez: Good coverage. Able to work as tight as need be. Money and mc placement.

SING - “Two Inmates”

Beautifully cut and staged. Interesting and well performed. NOT FRAMED PROPERLY. Music not appropriate for ‘The Block’. Fade out too soon on ending. Met both of them 2 days before the shoot.

Sing sez - Use drama to set up action. No CU as a rule. Hard to use. CUT back and forth. Faded out early

Timothy sez - Harder to edit - tired on this project. Sd discouraged me a little bit. Motivations for cuts hard to find. DOLLY MOVE FUN.

JP - “Where There Is Smoke” - Script 1
Fancy titles - nice B/W treatment - coverage at the beginning a litle weak. Tight CU’s nice. Dialog cuts and rives the film. Overhead an interesting use of master. Slow fade out on credits a little long.

Director says - wanted an ominous hidden agenda - waited to see the man in the moment. Working the ending to his satisfaction. Wanted to end on him

Feedback - Color titles/BW - HA - When do we see his face. Spooky. Staging behind her. Sd added. Editing process intimacy. Shift in emotional content. Moving into her world. Very real.

Timmy - “Brother’s Keeper” Script 7
Crossed Action Axis standing at the desk. Good cross cutting. Eyeline to wide to the right Good ending - ‘no booze’ - changed script to reflect their relationship. Good performances. Good BG noise.

Director says - Post enjoyable. Liked the two performers. Natural cutting

Feedback - Shot logic/ punctuation/ Matching CU - Timmy very buttoned down. From Very wide to tight.

Andrew - “Script #1”
Holds on master for a long time. Good CU over to the boy. LONG TAKE CUTTING. Crossed Axis in first painting position. Painting cutaways. Cut into the zoom. Solid work on boy CU. No music. Needs a CU on her to complete. No titles.

Director says - Characters/ Wounded kid/ Puppy Dog with emotional baggage/ She is kinky master painter and she’s a predator. Dominating.

Feedback - No Titles. Longer take process. Light from the floor. Painting. Not connected. Meat. Zoom in on painting. I don’t know what he’s so screwed up? She’s not as strong as he is. Who wants to see someone so aloof.

Marion - “Cold Feet”
Montage of pix over. Tight CU. Girl voice over. Drives story. Needs VO to clean up the work. Story a little muddled. Dress dream sequence? Needs a little work to clean up.

Director says - Getting there was hard. I love the B/W.

Feedback - A little confused about who is whom? 2 guys. Do you eliminate Charles and concentrate on the unseen predator.

Sing - “Peel”
Good opener. Full reverse OK. BLK spot on edit. Stage in depth. CUTAWAYS to transpose cut. Need to clean up the editing process.

Director says - Color correction. MCU too dark. I don’t want to have two many cuts. Slower cuts. Blocking and draw peoples attention to the blocking. Use long takes.

Feedback - Cutaways are our friends. Car door. Technical efforts

Patrick - “Roomates”
Flat and boring cut. Mismatching CU. Good music. Ominous.

Director says - I hate editing, It’s hard for me to do. Any movement scares me. Frankensteined together. I’m not sure it’s even coherent. Editing around holes in story and performance and movement. Fiddle forever.

Feedback - Good opener - performances vary. 2 different styles. Ominous music. A little heavy. Music A mistake to not block properly. Consideration before I am shooting. Intimacy is not clear.
